Led by strong pitching the Morehead State Eagles (23-19, 5-6) defeated Marshall for the second time this season, downing the Herd 3-2, Tuesday evening in Huntington.
Jeff Arnold and Cody Gibson pitched a combined eight-plus innings striking out six batters and allowing only two runs on six hits.
Down 2-1 in the seventh inning, Michael Bottoms and Andrew Deeds scored off a wild throw to first base from Marshall pitcher Ben Jurevicius, who was trying to throw out MSU's Eric Bainer.
Mother Nature won Saturday, forcing MSU and Tennessee Tech to compete in a double header Sunday.
MSU dropped the first game, 5-3, and the second 12-4. It was a dismal weekend for MSU, scattered with bits and pieces of good individual play.
The Eagles started game one with a run in the top of the first inning. Drew Lee singled up the middle and was later driven in by Cameron Flynn with a single of his own. TTU came back in the bottom of the first, plating three. MSU left runners at second and third in the top of the third inning and left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth. The Eagles stranded10 runners on base in the game.
Flynn hit his 13th home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game at 3-3. Michael Bottoms gave up his second home run of the game to give TTU a 5-3 lead. Bottoms pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on four hits.
MSU stranded two more runners in the bottom of the seventh when TTU closer Stephen Pryor came in to collect the final out. Lee went 3-for-4, along with Flynn's three RBI, to lead MSU in the losing effort. The second game saw TTU jump out to another early lead. TTU scored three runs in the bottom of the first, behind a two-run homer from Tate McMillan and an RBI double from Casanova Donaldson.
MSU hit four singles in the the top of the second, scoring two runs. Bottoms drove in Taylor Davis with a single to right and Travis Redmond legged out a single that scored Andrew Deeds.
TTU again answered the MSU threat with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Chad Hayes finished the inning with a two-run homer that gave TTU a 7-2 lead, which proved to be insurmountable.
MSU's Redmond and Davis went 3-3 in the losing effort. Matthew Robertson, who gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning, got the loss The Eagles will hit the road this weekend to take on Austin Peay in a three-game set.
