Reports of additional state budget cuts have been swirling around the Commonwealth for the past few weeks.

This week Governor Steve Beshear is scheduled to meet with the Economic Forecasting Group and its members are expected to lower their economic projections for the state.

The governor’s office probably has a better idea than citizens of what the budget shortfall is likely to be. The figure being bandied about if $300 million — or maybe more. Citizens and government agencies have a right to know immediately.

For all government agencies including public education institutions, such as Morehead State University, the budget, at the middle of the fiscal year, is an unknown.

Administrators are not able to plan purchases for next semester. Faculty and staff are unsure if their jobs will still be here next year. Students are unable to plan their financial futures as they worry about tuition increases.

All these problems are not based on facts or on hard numbers, but on uncertain feelings fired by bad economic news and rumors.

The people of the Commonwealth deserve to hear the facts now and should be spared from the continuing hush surrounding the governor’s office.

No matter how bad the truth, it is better than bad rumors and uncertainty.
